About the Dockumentary
On June 12, 1970 major league baseball pitcher Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates in San Diego. After retiring from professional baseball Dock maintained that he was high on LSD while pitching that day. Dock Ellis died of complications due to liver disease in December, 2008. His story has never been told in a feature film.
The no-hitter of June 12, 1970 will figure prominently in the film, but our greater goal is to present the back-story of Dock Ellis, both where he was coming from before that game and where he was going after. Core themes of drugs, race, baseball and pitching will be interwoven throughout, to both provide social context and illuminate the enduring and endearing qualities of Dock Ellis, baseball and America.
This film has received support from The Austin Film Society’s Texas Filmmakers Production Fund, The Center for Independent Documentary, and the Texas Film Commission’s Moving Image Industry Incentive Program.
